Sakurakai is a volunteer-operated NPO and offers a fun and educational Japanese immersion environment. Our small classes provide children opportunities to play and study in Japanese and become familiar with Japanese culture. We take the 100% language immersion approach and the classes are taught by native Japanese teachers. The curriculum starts at the junior kindergarten level and, for grade 1 and up, it uses Japanese school textbooks with the focus on Japanese and Math. Sakurakai meets at Summa Institute in SW Portland on Thursdays from 4:15pm to 6:15pm. The school year starts in April, and there is a two month-long summer vacation from July through August.
To be admitted, a child must be at least 4 years old and know basic Japanese. In addition, at least one parent or guardian must understand Japanese so that they can volunteer in the classroom and assist the child with his/her homework. For the junior kindergarten class, a parent or guardian must stay in the building during the class.
The tuitition is $45/month (as of September, 2015) and includes all materials.
We are enrolling throughout the school year.
